My name is Jack Messitt and I used to be a frustrated parent just like you. My days were stressful and I was losing my connection with my kids. Yes, my home has many challenges... But every household has their own unique hurdles to overcome.
I turned a corner – AND SO CAN YOU!
I grew up in the Midwest and became a swim instructor at the age of 13. So I knew about kids and what seemed to make them tick. And in some ways, I never grew up, riding a childhood love of the movies into a career as a cameraman.
If you Google me, you’ll find that I’ve been a cameraman on TV shows like SCANDAL, BLACK-ish and BONES. You’ll see that I wrote and directed a horror movie (MIDNIGHT MOVIE) and that I’m currently a camera operator on ABC’s MIXED-ish. You'll also find out that my twins were on TV, starring as Tommy Jr. on Netflix's FULLER HOUSE. But at home, they are just regular boys alongside their older brother. And I love being their Dad.
And no, I am not a professional chef. But I have taken culinary classes throughout the world: Italy, Thailand, Mexico, Bali, and in cities throughout the United States.
My wife and I had put off having kids in order to enjoy being married. And when we finally started on a family, we struggled...
Unexplained infertility we were told. After Multiple IUI's… Multiple IVF's… Nothing worked. But against all the odds, we still found a way to create our family. We ultimately found our sons through adoption, egg donation and surrogacy. So we’ve been through it all.
And more than just that, I saw first hand the deep effects that PADS (post-adoption depression syndrome) had on my wife. The worst part was that when we had finally pulled her through that, the stress of having three young ones while working full time pushed her back into a deep depression. She had simply stopped enjoying being a parent. Frankly, I think it had become a burden.
And while I always seemed to rise to the occasion and keep things going, my days were becoming a lot more stressful. And as they did, I realized that I was slowly starting to lose my connection with my kids. And when I actually realized this was happening, I stopped in my tracks...
So I spent over a year reading the latest research in child development. I started researching different parenting skills. I talked with doctors, psychologists, social workers… I interviewed my five sisters, my friends and a host of other parents - all to find out what actually works for real parents.
And when my wife and I started to use these “parenting secrets,” our house really became a much happier place to be.
Then one day I started sharing these parenting concepts with a friend of mine – another struggling parent - and I found myself using cooking analogies to help explain particular points. And that’s when it hit me:
So I decided combine these two passions of mine to make it something helpful for struggling parents - and create it in a way that was easy to share.
So using my skills as a screenwriter, I compiled my parenting research into easily digestible sections. Then, I scoured my cooking repertoire for recipes that complement and reinforce the particular parenting lessons I was teaching.
Better Parenting in 10 Easy Meals is the culmination of over two years of work. And I am so happy that it’s finally ready to share…
